The PgMP certification is for aspiring program managers that evaluate the certification holder’s skills and theoretical knowledge of the program management concepts. In addition, once you have become a PgMP certified, you will need to earn additional 60 PDUs (Professional Development Units) every 3 years for the continuation of the PgMP certification.

Certification

PgMP certification candidates must meet some advanced requirements to earn the designation.

To qualify for the PgMP credential, candidates must have one of the following sets of education and experience:

  • A secondary degree (high school diploma, associate degree or global equivalent), with a minimum of four years of project management experience and seven years of program management experience
  • A four-year degree (bachelor’s degree or global equivalent), with a minimum of four years of project management experience and four years of program management experience

If a candidate meets one of the above requirements, they can proceed to the next step of the PgMP application process, known as the Panel Review. In this phase, a panel of certified program managers reviews the candidate’s application and performs an assessment of the candidate’s professional experience.

Candidates who make it past the Panel Review must then pass the PgMP certification exam.

Exam

Candidates must take the PgMP certification exam within twelve months of passing the PMI Panel Review phase. The exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions and lasts four hours.

Here is a breakdown of the major knowledge domains covered by the PgMP exam, with an approximate percentage of how many questions are dedicated to each domain:

Candidates who do not pass the PgMP exam on their first attempt may retake the exam up to two more times in the one-year qualification period. Candidates who do not pass the exam after three attempts must wait twelve months from the last exam attempt before reapplying for the PgMP.

What do I have to do to earn the PgMP?

All candidates must pass two evaluations that include:

Application panel review during which a panel of program managers review your work experience and verify any aspect of your application.

The multiple-choice examination calls upon you to demonstrate your ability to apply your knowledge to a variety of situational or scenario-based questions.

Who are the application reviewers?

A panel of program managers has been appointed to serve as the application reviewers for the PgMP credential. PMI carefully selected members of this panel for their extensive knowledge and expertise in the field of program management. Since PMI appoints these members, there is no formal process available to the public to serve as a volunteer in this capacity. To protect applicants against any potential review bias, PMI will not provide candidate names, demographics, or employment information to the reviewers.

What is the cost of taking the PgMP exam?

The fee for PMI members is $800 and $1000 for non-members. The re-examination fee for members is $600 and for non-members $800.

How long is the PgMP certification valid for?

PgMP Certification is valid for three years and the candidate is required to attain 60 professional development units (PDUs) to maintain credentials.
