The Project Management Institute actively engaged a broad range of global stakeholders to identify practices to boost the value and use of the 7th Edition PMBOK guide. The inputs and feedback collectively addressed four key points:
- Maintaining and strengthening the PMBOK Guide’s credibility and relevance.
- Enhance the PMBOK Guide’s readability and usefulness while preventing new content overstuffing.
- Sense information and content requirements of stakeholders and provide the PMBOK Guide that promotes practical applications with evaluated supplement content.
- Recognize that the PMBOK Guide structure and contents of previous edits have continuing importance for stakeholders so that any shifts can improve this interest rather than making it ineffective.
Moreover, PMI and analysis from third parties have shown that technology and applications have powered innovation, new business models, and new ways to work over the last 10 years. New project design and management strategies have been generated through the revamped organizational models, project and product delivery expectations have been fulfilled, and outcomes rather than deliverables have been strongly focused. The latest updates have created the opportunity to further support the continued evolution of the PMBOK Guide and to retain the fundamental concepts that prevail in project management.
The 7th version of the PMBOK Guide demonstrates changes in line with stakeholder feedback, research-informed insights on the project delivery, and volunteer contributions within the global project management community.

Process-based standards are prescriptive although they are productive in supporting good practice. With the project delivery changing faster than never before, the process-based orientations in previous editions cannot be held so that the full value delivery landscape (e.g. predictive, hybrid and agile) is effectively reflected. This version, therefore, moves to a principle-based standard that extends to the entire delivery landscape, which in addition to deliverables – focuses on the results of the projects.
Several key principles are presented in the standard. The key principles seize and outline generally accepted objectives for the practice and essential functions of project management. These principles have specific guidelines for the activity of project teams, providing several means of keeping by the intention of the principles. The standard represents the effective management of all projects throughout the delivery landscape, using these key principle statements. This move does not negate from the process-based approach of previous issues. This approach tends to be useful for many organizations and professionals for directing their project delivery capabilities, aligning their methodologies and assessing their project delivery capabilities. In context to this new edition, the approach has remained relevant, and the details of these procedures have now been updated to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).
The system view of the value delivery as part of the standard is another significant change. This new perspective changes the value chain that connects those and other business strengths to advance the organizational strategy, value and company goals from one of the leading projects, programs, and portfolios. It also describes the use of specific practices, tools, methods or results depending on industry segments, project types or other characteristics.
Standards Plus incorporates new insights from the inputs, tools, techniques, and outputs of the PMBOK Guide – Sixth Edition that help the ongoing development of project delivery. The Standards Plus implementation is all set to launch in Q2-2020.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
