Changes in the PMI Authorized PMP Exam Prep

Lesson 1: Business Environment

The latest PMP exam prep removes the first lesson: “Creating a High-performing Team”. This topic is uniformly distributed throughout the new exam prep guide. The first lesson is now “Business Environment” and  will prepare the professional in foundational project management, organizational and business concepts that are important to your role
Lesson 1: Creating a high-performing team

The first lesson demonstrates how to build a high-functioning team, define team ground rules, build a shared understanding about a project and more. This chapter is removed in the latest PMP prep guide.
Lesson 2: Start the Project
The second chapter in the previous version of the PMI authorized PMP Exam prep was “Starting the Project”. In the latest 2023 version, this chapter is split into 2nd and 3rd lessons.
The second chapter will discuss how to think at the start of the project.
Lesson 2: Starting the Project
The second lesson in the current PMP prep guide is “Starting the Project”. It prepares the professional in determining the most suitable project methodology, planning and managing scope, budget, resources, schedule, and deliverables.
Lesson 3: Plan the Project

Lesson 5: Keeping the Business in Mind
This lesson includes managing compliance requirements, evaluating and delivering project benefit and value, and supporting organizational change and continuous process improvement.
Lesson 6: Close the Project/Phase
The latest PMI PMP changes have included an additional lesson in the PMP prep guide. It discusses how and when to close a phase or project and the important topic of benefits realization

There is no dedicated lesson in the current PMP prep guide. However the new PMI PMP changes introduce a new 6th lesson. 

PMI PMP changes:  The PMP exam in 2023

The latest PMI PMP changes will also impact the PMP exam. The new PMP exam will also include three domains:

  • People– includes questions on soft-skills mandatory for a project manager to lead a team effectively in today’s rapidly changing business environment. This domain contains 42% of the 180 questions.
  • Process– includes questions on technical aspects of project management. This domain includes 50% of the total questions.
  • Business Environment– questions about relationships between projects and organizational strategy. This domain shapes 8% of the PMP exam.

The PMP exam in 2023 will:

  • Have 180 questions 
  • Be of 230 minutes 
  • Will have two 10-minute breaks in computer based exam. No breaks in paper based exams.
  • Will contain a combination of MCQs, multiple responses, matching, hot-area, and fill in the blank questions.
