They do different jobs. A college certificate teaches project management from the start and suits people without project experience. The PMP is a professional certification that proves experience you already have. If you have led projects for three years or more, the PMP gets you further, faster.
The short answer
New to project work, or new to Canada and want a local credential and a classroom? A college certificate is a reasonable start. Already leading projects? Go straight to the PMP: our course is seven Saturdays, not two semesters.
What each one is
An Ontario College Graduate Certificate in project management is a full program of study. Seneca Polytechnic's, for example, runs two semesters, about eight months, full or part time. The PMP is PMI's certification for experienced project managers: 36 months of leading projects with a bachelor's degree, or 60 months with a secondary diploma, plus 35 hours of training and a 180-question exam.
Choose a college certificate if
You have little or no project experience and need the fundamentals. You want a Canadian credential on your résumé while you build that experience. You learn best in a structured program over several months with the same classmates.

Choose the PMP if
You already lead or manage projects, whatever your title. You want a credential that proves your experience, not only your study. You want it in weeks: our course runs seven live Saturdays, in person in Mississauga or online.
Can a certificate count toward the PMP?
Its training can help. Seneca says its program gives graduates the professional development units needed to write PMI's CAPM, PMP and PMI-ACP exams. What it cannot give you is the experience: graduates still need 36 to 60 months of leading projects before they can apply for the PMP. From 1 December 2026, PMI also counts live training toward the 35 hours only when it comes from an Authorized Training Partner or another eligible provider, so confirm with the college before you rely on it (what changed). Without the experience yet? The CAPM needs none.

How to decide
Count your months of project leadership against our PMP eligibility guide. Enough? The PMP is the faster route. Not enough? A certificate or the CAPM builds the base. Weighing a degree instead? Read master's or PMP. Still unsure? Tell us your background and we will tell you honestly which fits.
Frequently asked questions
- 01
Is a project management certificate the same as the PMP?
No. A certificate shows you completed a program of study. The PMP is PMI's professional certification, and it needs documented project experience, 35 hours of training and a passed exam.
- 02
Can I get the PMP with a college certificate and no experience?
No. A certificate's training can help with the 35 hours, but PMI still asks for 36 months of leading projects with a bachelor's degree, or 60 months with a secondary diploma. The CAPM needs no experience.
- 03
How long does each one take?
Seneca's graduate certificate runs two semesters, about eight months. Our PMP course runs seven Saturdays, and you book the exam once PMI approves your application.
- 04
Will a college course count toward the PMP's 35 hours after 1 December 2026?
Only if PMI treats the provider as eligible. Live training must come from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited academic provider, so ask the college before you rely on it.
Education Edge is a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP #4456). Every course is live and instructor-led, and selected courses carry a 100% pass guarantee or your money back.
