Is the CAPM worth it?

Education Edge · October 27, 2026 · 2 min read

Yes, if you are early in your project career and cannot meet the PMP's experience bar yet. The CAPM asks for no work experience, proves you know PMI's methods and vocabulary, and an active CAPM covers the 35 training hours you will need for the PMP later. If you can already document the experience the PMP asks for, skip it and go straight to the PMP.

The short answer

Take the CAPM if you coordinate projects without the title, you have recently graduated, or you are moving into project work from another field. If you have led projects and can show it, the CAPM adds a step you do not need: check your route in our PMP eligibility guide first.

What the CAPM proves

That you know how PMI expects projects to be run before you have a track record to show for it. The exam is wider than most people expect: Fundamentals and core concepts carry 36%, business analysis frameworks 27%, agile frameworks 20% and predictive, plan-based delivery 17%. So it suits project coordinators, business analysts and agile team members, not only future project managers.

It is worth it if

The roles you want ask for a project credential and you cannot sit the PMP yet. You are a newcomer to Canada with project experience but no credential here to show for it. You plan to take the PMP later, because an active CAPM covers its 35 training hours (how that works). Or you want the lightest upkeep in PMI's range: 15 PDUs every three years, against 60 for the PMP.

Go straight to the PMP if

You already lead projects, even without the title. Changing careers does not erase that experience, and if you can document it, the CAPM only delays the credential you are really after. Our post on PMP or CAPM when changing careers walks through that choice.

What it asks of you

A secondary diploma, being at least 18, and 23 hours of project management education completed by exam day. No work experience: PMI retired the old experience route. The exam is 150 questions in 180 minutes, 135 of them scored, and PMI does not publish a passing score. You get one year and three attempts to pass, and you renew by earning 15 PDUs every three years.
