What holding every PMI certification taught me about passing the PMP

Hemant Dhariyal · October 18, 2026 · 2 min read

I am one of only 20 professionals worldwide who hold every PMI designation, and I teach the PMP at Education Edge. People often ask what sitting all of PMI's exams taught me. The honest answer is that they all test the same thing in different ways, and once you see it, the PMP becomes much more manageable.

The exam rewards judgement, not memory

PMI has rebuilt the PMP so that it asks you to reason through scenarios rather than recall definitions. Every one of PMI's exams works this way: several answers are reasonable, and one is what PMI considers the best next step. You can memorise every term and still fail if you cannot choose between four sensible options.

Read the question as the project manager

Most wrong answers come from answering as yourself, in your own company, instead of as the project manager PMI describes. Before you look at the options, ask: what is my role here, what has already happened, and what is the next thing a good project manager would do? That habit alone moves scores.

Agile and predictive both matter

The exam covers three domains, People, Process and Business Environment, weighted at 33, 41 and 26 per cent, and it expects you to work in predictive, agile and hybrid settings. Candidates from traditional backgrounds often underestimate the agile questions, and the reverse is true too. Treat both as core.

Steady practice beats cramming

Judgement builds by meeting a type of question, getting it wrong, understanding why, and meeting it again later. That is why our course runs over seven Saturdays rather than a few long days, with 2,000+ practice questions between sessions. Read our seven-weekend study plan.

Ask why every wrong answer is wrong

When you review a practice question, do not stop at the right answer. Explain why each of the other three is worse. If you can do that, you understand the principle, and you will recognise it again in a different scenario on exam day.

What this means for how I teach

I teach live, in person in Mississauga and online, and I spend most of a class working scenario questions with the whole cohort, so you hear how others reason as well as how I do. If you want to learn this way, see our PMP course or read more about me and my credentials.
