PMI audits a share of PMP applications before the exam. If yours is selected, you are told by email before you pay the certification fee, and you cannot move on until the audit is complete. Most of the work is gathering documents you should already have.
Who gets audited
Every application is subject to audit, but only a percentage are selected. PMI describes the selection as random and reserves the right to audit any candidate at any time, including after the certification has been awarded. It audits all applications from PMI employees and volunteers.
What PMI asks you to send
Expect three kinds of evidence: a copy of your diploma or degree (or its global equivalent), signatures from the supervisors or managers for the project experience you listed, and certificates or letters from each training provider you used toward the 35 contact hours.

How long the audit takes
PMI allows 90 days to submit the documentation. Once you send a complete package, PMI says the audit should take about 5–7 business days. You download the audit package from your myPMI dashboard and submit it there.
If you do not complete it
If you do not meet the audit requirements, or choose not to comply, the audit fails and a 1-year suspension applies before you can reapply. When the audit is passed, your 1-year exam eligibility period starts on the day you are told.
Prepare before you apply
Write each experience description so the manager who signs it would recognise the work. Confirm those managers can still be reached before you submit. Keep your training certificate with the course title, provider, dates and hours together. If you are still earning your hours, ask the provider what completion record you will receive. Our PMP eligibility guide covers the experience rules in detail.
